Plants and Herbs in the Shennong Stream Area
A sail or a leave?
Along the upper Shennong Stream, tourists can find stretches of winter sweets, crythanthemum, wild scallion, wild garlic, cliff cabbage (Bergeniapurparascens), dove tree, Mognolia obovata, and other rare plants.
Dove tree
Among them, the most conspicuous is the dove tree. Its flowers, pure and white, look like white doves perching in the trees, so they are also called the "dove flowers". After the fourth glacial epoch, the dove tree disappeared almost completely all over the world except in Shennongjia. Today, the dove tree, as a friendship envoy, has been presented to many countries, and is called "dove tree from China". Its flowers are offering fragrance to all peoples on the six continents."
The upper reaches of the Shennong Stream have not only vast forest reserves, but also many medicinal herbs. According to the statistics, over 100 rare medicinal herbs are growing here, apart from countless ordinary ones. Among them are bulb of fritillary, Ganoderma lucidum, rhizome of Chinese gold thread, bark of official magnolia, bark of eucommia, Shennong musk daisy, to name a few.
Another precious product as famous as dangshen here is tuber of elevated gastrodia. The bulb of it has functions of nourishing the blood, reinforcing body fluid, relieving rheumatic pains and invigorating the spleen. It is particularly effective in treating vertigo headaches. That is why traditional Chinese medicinal doctors often put it down in the prescriptions, and few tourists would not buy some to take home at leaving.
